Principal's Report - Tuesday 31st May 2016
National Reconciliation Week
Last Thursday night, Horsham Rural City Council held a civic reception to mark “Sorry Day” and also to launch National Reconciliation Week. I was fortunate to hear an address from a young indigenous lady who is a medical doctor. Dr Ngaree Blow spoke with great passion about her traditional roots and how her culture is of immense pride to her. For the many community members present and also the Koorie youth, she was truly inspirational. Friday May 27 was the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, with events running through until June 3. There are many events being held in and around the Horsham area and I encourage all of you to participate in the various programs on offer.
Koorie Dance Performance
As part of National Reconciliation Week, the Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Rekindling Program, facilitated several dance performances in Horsham on Friday night. Congratulations to three DMSC students, Niah Boundy, Tallula Harradine-Hodge and Yasmin Harradine who performed with other Wimmera students. A large crowd witnessed what was a wonderful celebration of Koorie culture and it was great to see our students thoroughly enjoying themselves. Well done girls.
General Achievement Test (GAT)
Next Tuesday, all students who are studying a Unit 3-4 subject will sit the GAT. This test is designed to assess a range of skills across the areas of English, Humanities, Maths, Science and the Arts. Please encourage your son or daughter to take this test seriously – it is important that they achieve the best result they are capable of.
Curriculum Day – Pupil Free Day
Friday June 10 will be a pupil free day. Teachers will be correcting exams and end of semester assessments and preparing reports for distribution in the last week of term. Teachers will also use this time to reflect on the learning outcomes achieved by students and evaluate the units that have been taught. Please note that Monday June 13 is the Queen’s Birthday public holiday.
SMART Sessions and EXAMS
With exams next week – please encourage your children to attend our SMART sessions which are every Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Teachers are available to offer support and afternoon tea is provided.
At yesterday’s assembly, we presented the latest round of awards. Congratulations to all students who received Academic Awards for outstanding results in a range of subjects.
Greater Western Cross Country
Good luck to the DMSC athletes who will be competing in the next level of cross country in Warrnambool on Monday June 6. It is a long way to travel for our students and we wish them all the best.
