Principal's Report - Tuesday 8th March 2016
Little Desert Swimming
At the time of going to print, we had approximately 50 swimmers representing DMSC in the Little Desert Swimming Carnival. Unlike our own swimming sports, we are being treated to a very hot summer’s day! I am hoping to hear of some great results and accounts of our students simply doing their best.
Academic and Values Awards
Once again we are acknowledging the exemplary efforts of our students. On Monday March 21 we will be presenting the first round of awards for 2016 and I am thrilled with the amount of nominations I have already received. A full list of recipients will be published in the Hilltop on March 22.
This year we will be holding our ANZAC Day commemorative service on Friday April 22, commencing at 2.45pm. All parents and friends of DMSC are invited to join us for this service and more information will be published in the next few editions of the newsletter.
On ANZAC Day itself, there will be two services here at the college, the Dawn Service at 6.00am, followed by a free breakfast onsite, then the march and more formal service, commencing at 8.30am. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first ANZAC Day service and we hope to see many members of our community in attendance.
Staff Professional Learning
Following on from our professional learning program in 2015, staff are continuing with our program of peer observations. Staff are encouraged to visit each other’s classes – with a specific focus in mind.
For example, does the teacher ask a range of different questions? At a later time, feedback is provided by the teacher who is observing, then the other teacher can reflect on his or her teaching practice, and review and refine where necessary. This is an excellent system which allows staff to learn from each other. It also enables all staff to have a ‘feel’ and an understanding of what is happening in other classes. Your son or daughter would have
noticed various staff moving in and out of classes and I have been popping into various sessions as well.
Students on Show!
Later in the Hilltop you will read a story on an upcoming exhibition in the Yarra Building at Federation Square in Melbourne. It is exciting that we have Year 11 student Kynan Clarke exhibiting his artwork, and his other family members, including mum Kerrie, also have pieces included. The exhibition is running between March 12 and May 15.
Year 11 student, Lachlan Schultz is also experiencing success, with a great performance at the Victorian
Water ski Championships, held two weeks ago. Lachlan has qualified for the National Titles, to be held in NSW during Easter. We wish Lachlan the best of luck.
We are delighted by the steadily increasing numbers of students who are making the most of our SMART Sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays. Remember that your child will get an after-school snack and will have access to teacher expertise and internet and copying facilities. Please encourage your child to attend!
